Dharamsala

McLeod Ganj & Dharamshala

The city of Dharamshala serves as the administrative headquarters of the Kangra district and is also the winter capital of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.

Located within the Dharamshala municipality is the village of McLeod Ganj, home to the Tibetan Government-in-Exile and the residence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Situated at an altitude of approximately 2,080 meters, McLeod Ganj lies on the slopes of the Dhauladhar Range and is surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery. The panoramic views of the Himalayas from the village are considered among the most beautiful and peaceful in Himachal Pradesh.

The village was named after Sir Donald Friell McLeod, a British Lieutenant Governor of Punjab. It is often referred to as “Little Lhasa” because of its strong Tibetan cultural identity and its connection to Tibet’s spiritual heritage.

During the British colonial period, the area became a favored retreat for military officers and administrators, many of whom were captivated by its natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere. Over the years, McLeod Ganj has evolved into an important center for tourism, spirituality, and pilgrimage, continuing to attract visitors from around the world.

Together with the neighboring villages of Dharamkot and Bhagsu, McLeod Ganj offers a rich variety of opportunities to explore Buddhist philosophy, Tibetan culture, music, meditation, traditional healing practices, arts, and personal development programs.

“With every turn of the prayer wheels, blessings drift across the Himalayan peaks. The quiet smile of a young monk speaks of inner peace, ancient traditions, and a deep connection to the spiritual world.”

The region is home to several renowned institutions dedicated to preserving Tibetan culture and traditions, including the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA), the Norbulingka Institute for Traditional Tibetan Art and Crafts, and the Tushita Meditation Centre, a respected center for Buddhist studies and meditation.

Visitors can find and purchase exceptional Tibetan artwork and handicrafts throughout the village, with many workshops and schools producing some of the finest examples of traditional Tibetan craftsmanship in the world.

McLeod Ganj is also home to several monasteries, stupas, and the Tsuglagkhang Complex, the main temple and official residence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

In the nearby Hindu village of Bhagsu, visitors can explore the Bhagsunag Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Near the temple is a natural pool, and a short walk further leads to the beautiful Bhagsu Waterfall, one of the area’s most popular attractions.

Many of the local residents belong to the Gaddi tribe, a traditional pastoral community known for sheep and goat herding. While many families have maintained aspects of their traditional way of life, tourism has become an important source of livelihood for the region.

Located in the scenic Kangra Valley at the foot of the majestic Dhauladhar Range, Dharamshala also serves as a gateway to numerous outdoor activities and hiking opportunities.

One of the most popular trekking destinations is Triund, situated at an altitude of approximately 2,827 meters on a ridge of the Dhauladhar Mountains. From this spectacular viewpoint, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of snow-covered peaks, deep valleys, and the dramatic Himalayan landscape stretching in every direction.

Colorful Buddhist prayer flags dance in the wind against the stunning backdrop of the snow-capped Dhauladhar Mountains.
